Who are the Exus and their phalanxes?

First of all, it is necessary to understand what an exu is and what his function is in the Yoruba religions. In Candomblé, Exu is the messenger of the other orixás. According to the history of the religion, he made an agreement with the others so that every time someone needed their intermediary, he should deliver his dispatch first. And so it is until today.

Within Umbanda, the concept is almost the same, however, each orixá has several exus, identified with different garments and various behaviors. These phalanxes are the ones who, normally, incorporate themselves into people in terreiros and talk about the spiritual life. They are of great value when we talk about Umbanda and clarifications in general.

How the Exus and their phalanges act

The exus in Umbanda are understood as the 'street people' or 'catiço', which are spirits that were once human, died and today assist in the spiritual direction of other human beings. An example, which is not an exu, but follows this same concept, is the famous Zé Pilintra, who was a man and today is a helping entity.

Keep reading to find out which are the exus of each orixá and what is their direction of help for the beings that seek it!

Exus and Quimbanda

Quimbanda is a Yoruba religion that, although not as often cited as Umbanda and Candomblé, has very well known rites and practiced by the exercise of Yoruba faith. It is it, for example, that brings the concept of 'street people' into Umbanda.

It is valid to say that it is in it that the exus and pombagiras work and that, in several cases, they make use of negative force to be and be present, but this does not mean that the beings are negative, they just frequent spaces where obsessive spirits can be.

In Candomblé

Within Candomblé, Exu is one of the greatest orixás there is. This is because he is highly respected within any ritual. He is the intermediary between humans and divinities, the equivalent of the Greek Hermes, making possible all kinds of deeds, and is therefore highly respected.

His personality is understood to be that of someone who, although playful and mischievous, is fair, faithful and of his word. When his part in the deal is done right, he really does his part. Exu is much loved in Candomblé and his fame always precedes him.

In Jurema

The Jurema is a religion typically northeastern, which has a concept very similar to the Yoruba. Who is devoted to this religion is called juremeiro and its influences are mainly in the indigenous shamanism and pajelança.

Also known as Catimbó, the religion has Exu as an entity responsible for helping the left line, coordinating the works done. Its representation may be similar to Candomblé, since it is understood as a large and unique entity, different from Umbanda.

In Umbanda

Using the religious base of Quimbanda, the exus in Umbanda are understood as the 'street people' that help in the accomplishment of works done for orixás. These street people are composed of exus, which are male entities that, after being incarnated, work in the evolution of other human beings.

When these entities are female, they are known as pombagiras and their functions are determined according to each orixá for whom they 'work', the only difference is that when they were earthly beings, they were women. In general, the mission of the exus and pombagiras is very beautiful.
