What is the meaning of Odu #11, Owonrin?

Owonrin, or Owanrin Meji, is the eleventh of the sixteen Odus that make up the Yoruba oracle. In the Yoruba language, "Wó-ri" can be translated as "turning or turning the head," a metaphor for death. Its meaning, in this sense, points to a union between life and death, mutually representing the two dimensions.

The Odus are part of the Yoruba culture's divination system known as Ifá. It is the most important oracle for that culture, based on the sacred texts of the Odu Ifá.

This oracle is performed through the board of cowrie shells by Babalaôs, responsible for the cult of Ifá. Many religions of African origin in different parts of the world work with this divination system, including Brazil.

Each Odu is identified with the number of conch which, falling with the natural slit facing downwards, is considered open. Owonrin, therefore, is the fate that responds to eleven open and five closed conch. In this article we will discuss the characteristics of this Odu, and what the taking of it represents for your life.

Characteristics of Odu 11

If Odu 11 was opened for you during a prediction or if you are a child of this Odu it is very important that you know its main characteristics and meanings to understand the paths of your destiny. Below, we will present all the most important elements for the understanding of Owonrin.

History

The Odus of birth works in a similar way to our zodiac signs. It is a mark, a sign that is born with you and carries with it all the karma of the good and bad actions done in your past lives.

At birth, you are born with the mark of one of the sixteen main Odus that will be responsible for tracing your path in the world, as well as your personal characteristics and behaviors.

The orixás do not have the power to alter the destiny and life of their children, they only release energy for you to fulfill your destiny within the path you are already on. In summary, the Odu is the representation of your life as a whole: destiny, karma, personality, feelings, illnesses and existence.

If you choose paths other than those foreseen by your Odu, it is common to say that you have a negative Odu, which will bring you a sense of discomfort and non-belonging, precisely because of the detour you have chosen to take.

All Odus have a good and a bad dimension. The eleventh Odu, Owonrin, represents blessing and anxiety. The destiny of people ruled by this Odu is marked by fortune, achievements and wealth.

However, there is also a very harmful dimension marked by haste and anxiety, capable of affecting even your time on earth.

ruling orixá

The eleventh Odu is ruled by four different orixás: Iansã (Oiá), the orixá of fire, winds and lightning; Ogum, the orixá of war, iron and agriculture; Oxóssi, the orixá of hunting, animals and forests; and Exu, the orixá of language. Among all these orixás, Iansã and Exu are the closest corresponding orixás to Owonrin.

Cardinal points, planets and days of the week

Odu 11 is equivalent to the west (W) and southwest (SW) cardinal points. Moreover, Owonrin has Uranus as planetary correspondence, a planet that is associated with rebellious behavior, revolutions and sudden changes: the anxiety for changes and innovations are characteristics that bring them together.

Owonrin rules Sundays. Moreover, it is recommended that on the eleventh day of every month some thanks be given to this Odu.

Element

In Odu symbolism, everything that exists on earth is made up of four elements: water, fire, earth and air. The symbolism of Odu 11, Owonrin, is of one who has his head in earth and his feet in fire.

There is a predominance, therefore, of the earth element over the fire element in this Odu. This predominance is associated with the virtues of protection, help, admission and acceptance.

Body parts

Odu 11 acts mainly on three parts of the body: the heart, the arteries and the eyes. The heart symbolizes the courage and fighting spirit of its children who, because of their initiative and disposition, tend to drift away from religious faith.

The eyes, in this case, manifest the material, seductive and attractive aspects linked to the sons of Owonrin. They are people who give much importance to appearance and enjoy the pleasures that life can provide.

In both cases, these parts of the body need redoubled attention, because the voluptuous life that Odu 11 predicts can lead to health problems that directly affect the cardiovascular system and vision.

Favourable colours and numbers

Odu 11 is a sign very connected to the material dimensions of human existence. Its link with wealth and financial prosperity is represented by the color gold. In addition, Owonrin is also known to be the Odu of sexuality and seduction. Its voluptuous dimension is represented by warm colors like red, orange, yellow and burgundy.

The propitious numbers of Odu 11 are: 09, 13, 29, 45, 61, 77 and 93. Among all these, its main numerical value is number 13.

Vulnerable points

The vulnerable points of those under the influence of Odu 11 are the throat, the reproductive system and the digestive system. These vulnerable points stem from the most common negative propensities of their children.

Because they are materialistic people, attached to luxury and comfort, it is common that the organs connected to their sustenance (such as stomach and intestines) suffer an energetic overload and become susceptible to develop diseases such as tumors and constant abdominal pain.

The sexual behaviour of those governed by Odu 11 also negatively affects the organs linked to the reproductive system because of their pronounced voluptuousness and attachment to the carnal dimension of love and their relationships.

Prohibitions

The quizilas are elements that do not have a favorable energy to a particular orixá or Odu. Because they influence negatively the life of these deities, they also affect negatively the lives of their respective children. The quizilas can extend from food to clothing and can also involve children of other orixás.

The children of Odu 11 should avoid wearing colourful and printed clothes. They should also avoid wearing and possessing objects that also have more than two colours.

As for food, it is necessary that they avoid eating popcorn, corn and d'angola chicken meat. Bathing in the sea and practicing sexual relations with Omolu's children can also negatively affect their life.

If Owonrin is your Odu, it is important that you know some important recommendations to be in harmony with your ruler. First of all, give preference to wearing monochromatic or bicolor clothes, at most. Always opt to use stronger perfumes and make periodic smoking rituals with Java incense.

Secondly, it is advisable for children of Odu 11 to have a guava tree in the backyard of their home. Next to the tree, one should bury a tool of Ossain (the orixá of herbs and sacred leaves).

Legends

There are many versions of the Odus origin legends. Due to the impact, Ifá began to speak sixteen words and each of these words corresponded to a main Odu.

According to the sacred texts of Odu Ifá, Odu 11 is a female, nocturnal, incoming, cold and dry Odu. Owonrin was generated from a black, red and white cloth, water, cachaça and honey at a four-way crossroads.

Owonrin is the direct assistant of Ejonile (life) during the day, and of Ologbon (death) during the night. This is why Odu 11 is attributed with the knowledge of the secrets of life and death.
