Origin and history

As for the history of St. Patrick, it is not known for certain where he is from, but it is believed that he was born in Scotland or Wales and that his name had nothing to do with Patrick. Historians believe his true nomenclature was Maewyn Succat, son of Calpornius, a Romano-British army officer and deacon.

Born in the year 385, Patrick was kidnapped at the age of 16 by pagan Celtic warriors and was eventually enslaved. While preaching, it was common to see Patrick holding a clover leaf in order to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. Patrick was responsible for establishing schools, churches and monasteries in Ireland.

Consequently, he created a strong bond with Christianity and became one of the most talked about priests in Irish history.

Death

Regarding death, Saint Patrick died on March 17, 461 in Saul, a village in the Downpatrick region of Northern Ireland. It was in this place that he had established his first chapel, in a barn.

His remains, in turn, are buried in Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. In memory of the patron saint, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on the 17th.

Miracles of Saint Patrick

There are many legends and miracles attributed to St. Patrick, but only one is the most well-known and cited among people. It is believed that Patrick was responsible for driving all the snakes out of Ireland.

Before his stay in the country, the region contained a very large number of snakes, but the number suffered a drop after an alleged miracle attributed to St. Patrick. That is why, in many images, St. Patrick is seen with a staff in hand, killing an animal.

Visual characteristics

In a general, St. Patrick is depicted as a young man of 16 with white skin, grey hair and a medium beard also grey. In the images, he is seen wearing long green clothes and a crown and is always holding a staff. In addition, it is common for St. Patrick to be seen as a symbol of faith and Irish folklore.

What does St. Patrick's represent?

Among the main representations of St. Patrick are: the three-leaf clover, the leprechaun, the Celtic cross and the drinks. Check each one out:

- Three-leaf clover: The Catholic Church believes in the holy trinity of one and triune God at the same time. In order to simplify the explanation, Patrick used to use the three-leaf clover to illustrate God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one figure.

- Leprechaun: Leprechaun (or elf), is a small man-like creature with pointed ears. The representation is associated with Celtic culture, which became a symbol of Ireland and its traditions.

- Celtic Cross: It is a creation of Saint Patrick, in order to convert Irish Celts into Christians. It united the traditional solar cross (an important symbol for the Celtic people) with the Christian cross.

- Drinking: The Irish government usually prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public roads, throughout the year, except on March 17th, which is St. Patrick's Day. This liberation increases the purchase of alcoholic beverages, and the famous beer brands double their sales during this day.

Devotion in the world and beer

Celebrated on March 17 in several countries around the world, St. Patrick is considered the saint of brewers. Even the Guinness brand of beer is the drink of the Patron Saint's Day. On the day that St. Patrick's Day is celebrated, it is common for the consumption of this beer to increase from 5.5 million to 13 million liters.

In Ireland, on the other hand, weeks before St. Patrick's Day, pubs increase their stocks so there is no shortage of Guinness at the party.
