What are the psalms

The psalms were originally chanted by Christians, and were transcribed into the Bible. There are 150 psalms in all in the Roman Catholic Church and 151 in the Orthodox Church. They are found right after the Book of Job and before the Book of Proverbs, and are the largest book in the whole Bible.

They were written by King David for the most part, with 74 poems. There are also songs by King Solomon, Asaph, and the sons of Korah. Some are also of unknown origin, but all speak equally to the Christian heart. Know the best psalms for you to use in your daily life.

Psalms to calm the heart and ease anxiety

In many situations, it is difficult not to suffer from anxiety or to feel that tightness in the heart from time to time, so the need to reconnect can arise, and the psalms are an excellent way to do this.

Read with fervor, they are a balm for life's little challenges.

Psalm 4 to calm the heart and ease tribulations

For when your heart is tight and life's tribulations are trying to run you down, read Psalm number 4:

"Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness, in distress you have given me largesse; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

Children of men, how long will you turn My glory into infamy? How long will you love vanity and seek lies?

Know therefore that the Lord has set apart for himself one who is godly; the Lord will hear when I call to him.

Be troubled and sin not; speak with your heart upon your bed, and be silent.

Offer sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the Lord.

Many say: Who will show us the good? Lord, exalt the light of your face upon us.

You have put joy in my heart, more than at the time when they multiplied wheat and wine.

In peace also I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."

Psalm 8 to calm the heart and combat discouragement

If you are discouraged and need a hand of light on your path, you can count on Psalm 8:

"O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name in all the earth, for you have set your glory above the heavens!

You have commanded strength from the mouths of babes and sucklings, because of your enemies, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have prepared;

What is mortal man that you remember him? And the son of man that you visit him?

For thou hast made him little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor.

You make him have dominion over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:

All sheep and oxen, as well as the beasts of the field,

The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and everything that passes through the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name over all the earth!"

Psalm 26 to calm the heart and reduce anxiety

When your heart is anxious, as if on trial, and you need divine support, read Psalm 26:

"Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in my sincerity; I have also trusted in the Lord; I will not waver.

Examine me, O Lord, and try me; search my kidneys and my heart.

For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes; and I have walked in thy truth.

I have not sat with vain men, nor conversed with dissembling men.

I have hated the congregation of evildoers; neither do I associate with the wicked.

I wash my hands in innocence; and so I will walk, Lord, around your altar.

To publish with a voice of praise, and tell of all your wonders.

Lord, I have loved the habitation of your house and the place where your glory abides.

Do not take my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men,

In whose hands is mischief, and whose right hand is full of bribes.

But I walk in my sincerity; deliver me and have mercy on me.

My foot is set on a level path; in the congregations I will praise the Lord."

Psalm 121 for calming the heart and facing life's turbulences

For the times when you need to look up and ask for help in the face of life's turbulence, use Psalm 121:

"I will lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where my help comes.

My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.

He shall not let thy foot waver: he that keepeth thee shall not shear.

Behold, the keeper of Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is he who keeps you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

The sun will not trouble you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will guard your soul.

The Lord will guard your entrance and exit, from this time and forever."

Psalms to calm the heart and combat anguish

Anguish is a tyrant that dominates your heart, not allowing the beauty of life to make your days clearer. To help you find the light within your heart, all you have to do is turn to the Father and, in His praise, pray for help. To do this, choose some psalms that will help you calm your heart and fight against anguish.

Psalm 41 to calm the heart and quiet the mind

A troubled mind is the perfect workshop for evil, and it is important to quiet the mind and calm the heart. So read Psalm 41:

"Blessed is he who cares for the poor; the Lord will deliver him in the day of evil.

The Lord will deliver him, and keep him alive; he shall be blessed in the land, and you shall not give him over to the will of his enemies.

The Lord will sustain him on the bed of sickness; you will restore him from his bed of sickness.

I said, 'Lord, have mercy on me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.

Mine enemies speak evil of me, saying, When shall he die, and his name perish?

And if any of them comes to see me, he speaks vain things; in his heart he heaps up wickedness; coming out, that is what he speaks.

All they that hate me whisper one against me; they imagine evil against me, saying:

A bad disease has taken hold of him; and now that he is lying down, he will rise no more.

Even my own close friend, whom I trusted so much, who ate from my bread, raised his heel against me.

But you, Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up, that I may pay them back.

By this I know that you favor me: that my enemy does not triumph over me.

As for me, you uphold me in my sincerity, and set me before your face forever.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from century to century, Amen and Amen."

Psalm 46 to calm the heart and offer comfort

The arms of the Father offer all the comfort needed for the days when you need to calm your heart. For that, read Psalm 46:

"God is our refuge and fortress, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the seas.

Though the waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains be shaken for their bravery.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the sanctuary of the dwellings of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she will not be shaken. God will help her, even at the break of dawn.

The Gentiles were enraged; kingdoms moved; he raised his voice and the earth melted.

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Come, behold the works of the Lord; what desolations he has made on the earth!

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and cuts the spear; he burns the chariots in the fire.

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the Gentiles; I will be exalted on the earth.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge."

Psalm 50 to calm the heart and fight anguish

Reading a psalm out loud is perfect for calming the heart, lessening the anguish that stubbornly creeps in. Choose Psalm 50 and call Heaven to your bosom:

"The mighty God, the Lord, spoke and called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shone forth.

Our God will come, and will not hold his peace; a fire will burn before him, and there will be a great storm around him.

He will call the heavens from above, and the earth, to judge his people.

Gather My saints to Me, those who have made a covenant with Me with sacrifices.

And the heavens shall declare his righteousness; for God himself is the Judge.

Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will protest against thee: I am God, I am thy God.

I will not reprove you for your sacrifices, or burnt offerings, which are continually before me.

I will not take a calf out of your house, nor goats out of your stalls.

For mine is every beast of the jungle, and the cattle on a thousand mountains.

I know all the birds of the mountains; and mine are all the beasts of the field.

If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for mine is the world and all its fullness.

Shall I eat the flesh of bulls? Or shall I drink the blood of goats?

Offer to God a sacrifice of praise, and pay to the Most High your vows.

And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.

But to the wicked God says, "What do you do in reciting my statutes, and in taking my covenant into your mouth?

Since you hate correction, and throw my words behind you.

When you see the thief, you consent with him, and have your share with adulterers.

You loose your mouth for evil, and your tongue composes deceit.

You sit and speak against your brother; you speak evil against your mother's son.

These things thou hast done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was such as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes:

Hear this, then, you who forget God; lest I tear you to pieces, and there be none to deliver.

He who offers the sacrifice of praise will glorify me; and to him who orders his way well I will show the salvation of God."

Psalm 77 to calm the heart and heal anguish

So many are the words and so many are the signs from God to soothe the heart of a beloved child. Psalm 77 helps to heal the anguish and reunite:

"I cried to God with my voice, to God I lifted up my voice, and he inclined his ear to me.

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; my hand was stretched out in the night, and it ceased not; my soul refused to be comforted.

I remembered God, and was troubled; I complained, and my spirit was faint.

You kept my eyes awake; I am so upset that I cannot speak.

He considered the days of antiquity, the years of ancient times.

At night I called to memory my song; I meditated in my heart, and my spirit searched.

Will you reject the Lord forever and not be favorable again?

Has his kindness ceased forever? Has the promise from generation to generation ended?

Has God forgotten to be merciful? Or has he locked up his mercies in his anger?

And I said, This is my infirmity; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.

I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember your wonders of old.

I will meditate also on all thy works, and talk of thy doings.

Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary. Who is so great a God as our God?

You are the God who does wonders; you have made your strength known among the peoples.

With Your arm You have redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee, and trembled; the depths also were shaken.

The clouds spewed water, the heavens gave a sound; your arrows ran from one to another.

The voice of your thunder was in the sky; lightning lit up the world; the earth shook and trembled.

Your way is in the sea, and your paths in the great waters, and your steps are not known.

You have led your people, like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron."

Psalm 22 to calm the heart and restore strength

Be strong, be righteous, be good, and He will not forsake you. But when you need to restore your strength, count on Psalm 22:

"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why dost thou shun my help, and the words of my cry?

My God, I cry in the daytime, and you do not hear; in the night, and I have no rest.

But you are holy, you who dwell among the praises of Israel.

In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.

They cried to you, and escaped; they trusted in you, and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm, and not a man, reproached of men and despised of the people.

All who see me mock me, and stretch out their lips and shake their heads, saying:

He trusted in the Lord, let him be free; let him be free, for he takes pleasure in him.

But you are the one who took me out of the womb; you made me trust, being at my mother's breast.

I was cast upon you from the womb; you are my God from my mother's womb.

Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.

Many bulls surrounded me; strong bulls of Bashan surrounded me.

They opened their mouths against me, like a lion that tears apart and roars.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax, melted in the midst of my bowels.

My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaves to my palate; and thou hast laid me in the dust of death.

For dogs have surrounded me; the mob of evildoers has surrounded me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.

I could count all my bones; they see and behold me.

They part my garments among themselves, and cast lots for my clothes.

But thou, Lord, be not far from me. Strengthen me, make haste to help me.

Deliver my soul from the sword, and my favorite from the power of the dog.

Save me from the lion's mouth; yes, you heard me, from the tips of the wild oxen.

Then I will declare your name to my brothers; I will praise you in the midst of the congregation.

You who fear the Lord, praise him; all you seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all you seed of Israel.

For he neither despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, nor hid his face from him; but when he cried out, he heard him.

My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation; I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

The meek shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD; your heart shall live forever.

All the borders of the earth shall remember, and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before your face.

For the kingdom is the Lord's, and he has dominion over the nations.

All who are fat on earth shall eat and worship, and all who go down to the dust shall bow down to him; and none shall keep his soul alive.

A seed will serve him; it will be declared to the Lord every generation.

They will come and proclaim his righteousness to the people who are born, because he has done it."

Psalm 23 to calm the heart and renew hope

Hope is like the sun. If you only believe when you see, you will never survive the night. But when you lack hope, read Psalm 23:

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing.

Lay me down in green pastures, lead me gently to still waters.

Cool my soul; lead me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for long days."

Psalm 28 to calm the heart and bring serenity to life

When calm and serenity fade away and we need to calm our hearts, all we have to decide is what to do with the time we are given. Reading Psalm 28 is a path to peace:

"I will cry to thee, O Lord, my Rock: be not slack toward me; lest, as thou art toward me, I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry to thee, when I lift up my hands to thy holy oracle.

Do not drag me with the wicked and with the workers of iniquity; who speak peace to their neighbor, but have evil in their hearts.

Give them according to their works and according to the evil of their efforts; give them according to the work of their hands; give them their reward.

Because they pay no attention to the works of the Lord, nor to the operation of his hands; for he will tear them down and not build them up.

Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard the voice of my supplications.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I was helped; so my heart leaps for joy, and with my song I will praise him.

The Lord is the strength of his people; he is also the saving strength of his anointed.

Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance; and feed them, and exalt them for ever."

Psalm 42 to calm the heart and combat sadness

Psalm 42 can be your light in the darkness when all other lights go out. It is perfect for calming the heart and fighting sorrow at once.

"As the deer roars for the streams of water, so my soul sighs for you, O God!

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and stand before God?

My tears serve me as food day and night, while they constantly tell me: Where is your God?

When I remember this, my soul pours out within me; for I had gone with the multitude. I went with them to the house of God, with a voice of joy and praise, with the multitude that rejoiced.

Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you troubled in me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him for the salvation of his face.

O my God, within me my soul is bowed down; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan, and from the Hermonites, from the little mountain.

One abyss calls another abyss, at the noise of your crashes; all your waves and your waves have passed over me.

Yet the Lord will send his mercy by day, and by night his song will be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God my rock, 'Why have you forgotten me? Why have I been mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

My adversaries reproach me with a deadly wound in my bones when they say to me every day, 'Where is your God?

Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you troubled within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the salvation of my face, and my God."

Psalm 83 to calm the heart and renew faith

Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole ladder. However, if it is missing, read Psalm 83 to calm your heart:

"O God, be not silent; be not silent, nor stand still, O God,

For, behold, thine enemies make a tumult, and they that hate thee have lifted up their heads.

They took crafty counsel against your people, and consulted against your hidden ones.

They said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, and let there be no more remembrance of the name of Israel.

Because they consult together and unanimously; they unite against you:

The tents of Edom, and of the Ishmaelites, of Moab, and of the Agarenes,

Of Gebal, and of Ammon, and of Amalek, Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre;

Assyria also joined them; they went to help the sons of Lot.

Do to them as to the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin at the river Kishon;

They perished in Endor; they became as dung for the earth.

Do unto his nobles as unto Oreb, and as unto Zeeb; and to all his princes as unto Zebah, and as unto Zalmunna,

Who said, "Let us take the houses of God into our possession.

My God, make them like a typhoon, like the edge before the wind.

Like the fire that burns a forest, and like the flame that ignites the wilderness,

So pursue them with your storm, and haunt them with your whirlwind.

Let their faces be filled with shame, that they may seek Your name, O Lord.

Be confounded and haunted forever; be ashamed, and perish,

That they may know that you, to whom alone belongs the name of Lord, are the Most High over all the earth."

Psalm 119 to calm the heart and offer support

Offering support is not only for great preachers, for even the smallest person can change the course of the future and soothe a wounded heart. For moments like these, read the great Psalm 119:

"Blessed are the upright in their ways, who walk in the law of the Lord.

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, and who seek him with all their heart.

And they do not practice lawlessness, but walk in their ways.

You commanded your commandments, that we should diligently observe them.

I wish my ways were directed to observe your commandments.

Then I would not be confounded, observing all your commandments.

I will praise you with uprightness of heart when I have learned your righteous judgments.

I will observe your statutes; do not utterly forsake me.

With what will the young man purify his way? by observing him according to your word.

I have sought you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commandments.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Blessed art thou, O Lord; teach me thy statutes.

With my lips I have declared all the judgments of your mouth.

I have rejoiced as much in the way of your testimonies, as in all riches.

I will meditate on your precepts, and have respect for your ways.

I will rejoice in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

Do good to your servant, that he may live and keep your word.

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold the wonders of thy law.

I am a stranger on earth; do not hide Your commandments from me.

My soul is broken from longing for your judgments at all times.

You harshly rebuke the proud who are cursed, who turn away from Your commandments.

Take away from me reproach and scorn, for I have kept Your testimonies.

Princes also sat down and spoke against me, but your servant meditated on your statutes.

Also your testimonies are my pleasure and my counselors.

My soul is laid in the dust; quicken me according to your word.

I have told thee my ways, and thou hast heard me: teach me thy statutes.

Make me understand the way of your precepts; then I will speak of your wonders.

My soul is consumed with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.

Turn away from me the way of falsehood, and grant me your law mercifully.

I chose the path of truth; I set out to follow your judgments.

I cling to your testimonies; O Lord, do not confuse me.

I will run the way of your commandments, when you enlarge my heart.

Teach me the way of your statutes, O Lord, and I will keep it to the end.

Give me understanding, and I will keep Your law, and observe it with my whole heart.

Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for therein do I delight.

Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken me in thy way.

Confirm your word to your servant, who is devoted to your fear.

Turn away from me the reproach I fear, for Your judgments are good.

Behold, I have desired your precepts; quicken me in your righteousness.

Let your mercies also come upon me, O Lord, and your salvation according to your word.

So I will have to answer the one who affronts me, for I trust in your word.

And do not utterly take the word of truth out of my mouth, for I have waited on your judgments.

So I will continually observe your law forever and ever.

And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

I will also speak of your testimonies before kings, and will not be ashamed.

And I will delight myself in your commandments, which I have loved.

I will also lift up my hands to your commandments, which I have loved, and I will meditate on your statutes.

Remember the word given to your servant, in which you made me wait.

This is my consolation in my affliction, for your word has made me alive.

The proud have greatly mocked me; yet I have not departed from your law.

I remembered Your ancient judgments, O Lord, and so I took comfort.

Great indignation has come upon me because of the wicked who forsake Your law.

Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

I remembered your name, O Lord, by night, and observed your law.

This I have done, because I have kept your commandments.

The Lord is my portion; I said I would observe your words.

I have earnestly sought your favor with all my heart; have mercy on me according to your word.

I have considered my ways, and turned my feet to thy testimonies.

I hastened, and did not stop, to observe your commandments.

Bands of wicked men have stripped me, but I have not forgotten your law.

At midnight I will rise to praise You for Your righteous judgments.

I am the companion of all those who fear you and those who keep your precepts.

The earth, O Lord, is full of your lovingkindness; teach me your statutes.

You have done well to your servant, Lord, according to your word.

Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.

Before I was afflicted I walked in error; but now I have kept Your word.

You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.

The proud have forged lies against me; but I with all my heart will keep your precepts.

Their hearts are thick as fat, but I take pleasure in your law.

It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

Better is the law of thy mouth unto me than thousands of gold or silver.

Your hands have made and formed me; give me intelligence to understand your commandments.

Those who fear you rejoiced when they saw me, because I have hoped in your word.

I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are righteous, and that according to Your faithfulness You have afflicted me.

Let Your loving kindness therefore comfort me, according to the word which You have given Your servant.

Let your mercies come upon me, that I may live; for your law is my delight.

Let the proud be put to shame, for they have dealt wickedly with me without cause; but I will meditate on your precepts.

Let those who fear you, and those who have known your testimonies, turn to me.

Let my heart be right in thy statutes, that I be not put to shame.

My soul faints for your salvation, but I hope in your word.

Mine eyes fail at thy word: meanwhile I said, When wilt thou comfort me?

For I am like a wineskin in smoke; yet I do not forget your statutes.

How many days shall thy servant be? when wilt thou execute justice against them that persecute me?

The proud have dug graves for me, which is not according to your law.

All your commandments are truth. They persecute me with lies; help me.

They have almost consumed me upon the earth, but I have not left your precepts.

Quicken me according to thy lovingkindness: so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

Forever, O Lord, your word remains in heaven.

Your faithfulness endures from generation to generation; you have established the earth, and it stands fast.

They continue to this day, according to your ordinances; for they are all your servants.

If your law were not all my recreation, I would long ago have perished in my affliction.

I will never forget your precepts; for by them you have made me alive.

I am yours, save me; for I have sought your precepts.

The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will consider your testimonies.

I have seen the end of all perfection, but your commandment is very broad.

Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all day long.

You, by Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are always with me.

I have more understanding than all my masters, because your testimonies are my meditation.

I understand more than the ancients; for I keep your precepts.

I have turned my feet from every evil way, to keep Your word.

I have not departed from your judgments, for you have taught me.

Oh! how sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.

By your commandments I have attained understanding; therefore I hate every false path.

Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

I have sworn, and will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

I am afflicted; quicken me, O Lord, according to your word.

Accept, I beseech you, the voluntary offerings of my mouth, O Lord; teach me your judgments.

My soul is continually in my hand; yet I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me; yet I have not strayed from your precepts.

Your testimonies I have taken for an inheritance forever, for they are the joy of my heart.

I have inclined my heart to keep your statutes, for ever, to the end.

I hate vain thoughts, but I love your law.

You are my refuge and my shield; I hope in your word.

Depart from me, you evildoers; for I will keep the commandments of my God.

Sustain me according to your word, that I may live, and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

Sustain me, and I will be saved, and I will continually abide by your statutes.

You have trodden underfoot all those who stray from Your statutes, for their deceit is falsehood.

You removed all the wicked from the earth, like scum, so I love your testimonies.

My body trembled with fear of you, and I dreaded your judgments.

I have done judgment and justice; do not hand me over to my oppressors.

Stand surety for your servant for good; do not let the proud oppress me.

My eyes fail for your salvation and the promise of your righteousness.

Show kindness to your servant, and teach me your statutes.

I am your servant; give me intelligence, that I may understand your testimonies.

It is time for you to operate, O Lord, for they have broken your law.

Therefore I love your commandments more than gold, and even more than fine gold.

Therefore I esteem all your precepts in everything as right, and I hate every false path.

Wonderful are your testimonies; therefore my soul treasures them.

The entrance of your words gives light, gives understanding to the submissive.

I opened my mouth, and breathed, for I desired your commandments.

Look upon me, and have mercy on me, as You use on those who love Your name.

Order my steps in your word, and let no iniquity take hold of me.

Deliver me from the oppression of man; so will I keep Your precepts.

Make Your face to shine upon Your servant, and teach me Your statutes.

Rivers of water flow from my eyes, because they do not keep your law.

Righteous art thou, O Lord, and just are thy judgments.

Your testimonies that you have commanded are straight and very faithful.

My zeal has consumed me, because my enemies have forgotten your word.

Your word is very pure; therefore, your servant loves it.

I am small and despised, but I do not forget your commandments.

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your law is truth.

Affliction and anguish have taken hold of me; yet your commandments are my delight.

The righteousness of your testimonies is eternal; give me intelligence, and I shall live.

I cried with all my heart; hear me, O Lord, and I will keep your statutes.

I have called upon thee; save me, and I will keep thy testimonies.

I anticipated the nightfall, and cried out; I waited for your word.

My eyes anticipated the night vigils, to meditate on your word.

Hear my voice, according to your lovingkindness; quicken me, O Lord, according to your judgment.

Those who give themselves to ill-treatment draw near; they turn away from your law.

You are near, O Lord, and all your commandments are truth.

About your testimonies I have known from ancient times that you have founded them forever.

Look upon my affliction, and deliver me, for I have not forgotten your law.

Plead my cause, and deliver me; quicken me according to your word.

Salvation is far from the wicked, because they do not seek your statutes.

Many are your mercies, O Lord; quicken me according to your judgments.

Many are my persecutors and my enemies; but I do not deviate from your testimonies.

I saw the transgressors, and I was afflicted, because they do not keep Your word.

Consider how I love your precepts; quicken me, O Lord, according to your lovingkindness.

Your word is truth from the beginning, and every one of your judgments endures forever.

Princes persecuted me without cause, but my heart feared your word.

I rejoice at your word, as one who finds great spoil.

I abhor and hate lying; but I love your law.

Seven times a day I praise You for the judgments of Your righteousness.

Great peace have those who love your law, and there is no stumbling block for them.

Lord, I have hoped for your salvation, and I have kept your commandments.

My soul has observed your testimonies; I love them exceedingly.

I have observed your precepts, and your testimonies, for all my ways are before you.

Let my cry come to you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word.

Let my supplication come before you; deliver me according to your word.

My lips uttered praise, when You taught me Your statutes.

My tongue shall speak of your word, for all your commandments are righteousness.

Let your hand come to my aid, for I have chosen your precepts.

I have longed for your salvation, O Lord; your law is all my delight.

Let my soul live, and praise thee; let thy judgments help me.

I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commandments."

Psalms to soothe another person's heart

The world has changed, and much of what was there before is lost. One does not simply enter a new world without calming the heart and helping those in need. To prepare yourself and practice charity, even where there is evil that never sleeps, choose the following psalms.

Psalm 74 to calm the heart and protect against attacks

To protect yourself against attacks, appeal to Psalm 74 and evil shall not pass. And don't worry, for help is never late, but neither does it come too soon. It comes precisely when it is needed.

"O God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger flare up against the sheep of your pasture?

Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased from of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

Lift up your feet to the perpetual desolations, to all that the enemy has done wrong in the sanctuary.

Your enemies roar in the midst of your holy places; they put their insignia on them for signs.

A man became famous according to how he raised his axes against the thickness of the trees.

But now every carved work at once they break with axes and hammers.

They have cast fire into Your sanctuary; they have profaned the dwelling place of Your name, bringing it down to the ground.

They said in their hearts, "Let's strip them at once. They burned all God's holy places on earth.

We no longer see our signs, there is no longer a prophet, nor is there anyone among us who knows how long this will last.

How long, O God, will the adversary defy us? Will the enemy blaspheme your name forever?

Why do you withdraw your hand, that is, your right hand? Take it from within your bosom.

Yet God is my King from ancient times, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

You have divided the sea by your might; you have broken the heads of the whales in the waters.

You cut Leviathan's heads to pieces, and gave him for food to the inhabitants of the desert.

You split the fountain and the stream; you dried up the mighty rivers.

Yours is the day and yours is the night; You have prepared the light and the sun.

You have established all the boundaries of the earth; summer and winter you have formed them.

Remember this: that the enemy has defied the Lord, and that a foolish people have blasphemed your name.

Do not surrender the soul of your turtledove to the beasts; do not forget forever the life of your afflicted ones.

Heed your covenant; for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

Oh, let not the oppressed return ashamed; let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.

Arise, O God, plead your own cause; remember the affront that the foolish man makes to you each day.

Do not forget the cries of your enemies; the tumult of those who rise up against you is continually increasing."

Psalm 91 to calm the heart and protect from negative energies

If you want to calm your heart, you need to get away from bad feelings, because they are the pathway for negative energies. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. To soothe, read Psalm 91:

"He who dwells in the hiding place of the Most High, in the shadow of the Almighty shall rest.

I will say of the Lord, 'He is my God, my refuge and my fortress, and in Him I will trust.

For he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the pernicious pestilence.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will take refuge; his truth will be your shield and brooch.

You will not be afraid of the terror by night nor of the arrow that flies by day,.

Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the deadness that rages at noon.

A thousand will fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come to you.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the reward of the wicked.

For you, O Lord, are my refuge; in the Most High you have made your dwelling.

No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your tent.

For he will give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.

They will support you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

You shall tread upon the lion and the snake; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

Because he has loved Me so dearly, I also will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will bring him out of trouble, and will glorify him.

I will fill him with long days, and show him my salvation."

Psalm 99 for calming someone else's heart

If you want to soothe another person's heart, you need to remember that the darkness will pass and a new day will come, and when the sun shines, it will shine even brighter. In the meantime, pray with Psalm 99:

The LORD reigns; let the people tremble. He sits among the cherubim; let the earth tremble.

The Lord is great in Zion, and higher than all the peoples.

Let them praise your name, great and tremendous, for it is holy.

Also the King's power loves judgment; you establish equity, you make judgment and justice in Jacob.

Exalt the Lord our God, and bow yourselves before his footstool, for he is holy.

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who called on his name, cried out to the Lord, and he answered them.

In the pillar of cloud he spoke to them; and they kept his testimonies and the statutes which he had given them.

You heard them, Lord our God: you were a God who forgave them, even though you took vengeance for their deeds.

Exalt the Lord our God and worship him on his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.

How often should I read the psalms to calm my heart?

The reading of the psalms should be done according to your needs. Some people choose to leave the psalm written down on a piece of paper within easy reach for times of need, while others make a habit of reading one psalm in the morning and another before going to bed to bring serenity.

In any case, the connection with God is very personal and the way of reading will depend on your integration and predisposition. More important than the number of repetitions is the intention, as well as how sincere your prayer is to calm your heart.
