Who are the Roma people?

First of all, it is necessary to know that the gypsy line is different from the Eastern line, because each one has its own way of manifesting. In Umbanda, the gypsies are free and detached spirits that are attracted by the affinity of the gypsy magic, and can be called "children of the wind", exactly because they are always in movement.

The Gypsy, or Romi, people incarnated on planet Earth are the ones who pass through continents and countries, since their emergence in the XIII century, sharing experiences, stories, culture and secrets. As they are very connected with spirituality, they possess great wisdom and are guardians of magic and occultism.

History of gypsy entities in Umbanda

The Roma people were spread throughout Europe and spent a long time without a nation of origin. Until, in the 18th century, in Germany, a historian carried out research with a linguist about the origin of these people through their Romani language. Then, through comparisons and gene testing, they discovered that they emerged from northwestern India.

Umbanda emerged at the beginning of the 20th century in Brazil, when black people were still marginalized and excluded from society. Thus, after the gypsies arrived in the country, they were also marginalized, persecuted and excluded by society, identifying themselves with the blacks. Eventually, they joined the blacks, creating a spiritual bond between them.

The formation of this bond was facilitated by the fact that these people worship the same spiritual entities as the blacks in Umbanda. With this union, some entities such as the Gypsy of Souls, the Gypsy of the Cross, among others, are part of the terreiros. Just as some spirits are attracted by the sound of atabaques, so are the gypsies.

Relationship between Gypsies and Exu

The gypsies have their own rituals, ways of working and worship the nature and the stars, aiming for progress and financial and loving success. These entities incorporate into their own line, but can also incorporate into the lines of Exu to work.

This happens because their works are a little similar and, according to other fathers of saint, the gypsies are from the center, so, they are more versatile in the works, being able to work with left and right lines. Besides, these spirits can be considered a street people, because they are always on the roads.

How is the action of gypsies in Umbanda?

Within the giras in Umbanda, the gypsies work accompanied by a "Chief Gypsy" to help all who need it. This line of work is usually present in almost all terreiros and works with the four elements of nature, with colors, crystals, herbs, incense, conjurations and phases of the moon.

These spirits work with joy, give guidance, help in love, financial and family matters and break demands. They also teach people to seek independence, freedom, self-love, more firmness in thoughts and to face and overcome life's obstacles, as this is a natural process.

Symbols of Gypsy entities

Gypsy entities have some symbols that they use in different degrees and vibratory ranges of each person, reaching other spiritual realities that may be connected to the person. The most known symbols are the Key, the Cup, the Anchor, the Horseshoe, the Moon, the Coin, the Dagger, the Clover, the Wheel, the Owl, the 5 Pointed Star and the 6 Pointed Star.

The Key, for example, is used to attract solutions to problems, financial success and riches, while the Horseshoe is used to attract good luck and positive energies, representing work and effort, being a great talisman against bad luck and attracting fortune.

In addition, the moon represents magic and mystery. It is used by gypsies to attract feminine power, perception and healing. According to the lunar phase, the full moon is the one with the most energy and link to the sacred, and gypsy line parties always take place during this period.

Division of gypsies in Umbanda

There is a division of gypsies in Umbanda into six different ethnicities, considered families or clans, which can manifest themselves both in the gypsy line itself and in the Orient line, which work on the Left. Read the following topics and find out more about this division!

Arab Gypsies

The Arab Gypsies come from North Africa, Egypt and several countries in the Middle East. This line works with emotional and physical healing, gives wise advice to people and has a very high and subtle energy. Therefore, the medium needs to connect with this energy to avoid problems.

In addition, there is little information and knowledge about some gypsies of this line, because they did not want their knowledge to fall into the hands of ill-intentioned people. Therefore, the terreiros themselves are charged with working with this spiritual current and can accept spirits from various countries such as Egypt, China, Japan and other eastern nations.

Iberian Gypsies

Iberian Gypsies, or Calon, are from Spain and Portugal, known as Gitanos. The Calon Gypsies are nomads and good traders of horses, jewelry and other shiny artifacts that looked like gold. In this people, women practiced palmistry (reading of hands) in public squares.

However, they were deported from Portugal and arrived in Brazil in the XVI century, with the native language Shib Kalé, which is the mixture of the Roman, Portuguese and Spanish languages. They are devotees of Nossa Senhora da Aparecida, known as the Patroness of Brazil in syncretism, since, in Umbanda, she is known as Oxum, the Orixá of sweet waters and gold.

Royal Gypsy Family

The Royal Gypsy Family is very rare to be contacted or seen anywhere, having its origin in the Indies, in the Far East. Therefore, this is one of the Gypsy groups that has little or no record about their histories, customs and practices, which makes them more mysterious.

Eastern European Gypsies

The origin of the gypsies from Eastern Europe was in the Romani language, migrating to other countries in Europe and the Americas in the nineteenth century. These gypsies have subgroups present in Brazil, which are the Kalderash, Matchuai, Lovaria, Curara and Rudari, all devotees of Santa Sara Kai.

The Kalderash consider themselves "pure," but some continue to be nomadic and work in the vehicle trade, while the women work with palmistry and cartomancy. The Matchuai, from Serbia, are more sedentary, live in the larger cities, survive on divinatory arts, and do not identify with the clothing considered gypsy.

The Lovaria subgroup, on the other hand, is formed with few members who are usually sedentary, but who like to work with commerce and horse breeding. Finally, the Rudari also have a smaller number of members, but live with the sale of wood and gold handicrafts. It is common to find them in Rio de Janeiro.

Latin Gypsies

The Latin Gypsies are the people with the least spiritual evolution, but they have knowledge of the Brazilian reality and more freedom when it comes to gypsy morals and traditions. These people started living in Brazil shortly after colonization, after arriving in the country.

In addition, these spirits may have a strong bond with Gypsy Exus and Pombagiras, working together with these lines, depending on the level of spiritual evolution. However, there are controversies that the Gypsy lines do not work together with these two lines.

Gypsy Expurgation

Expurgated Gypsies, usually, are those who are not recognized as Gypsies by their own people. They are also those who abdicate their status, rejecting their traditions and living in a different way, even leaving their family and their people.

However, there are those who were belatedly adopted by Romani families or who married a Romani and started living with his family. Therefore, it is understood that this nomenclature is given to those who entered the families belatedly or who left them.

To avoid being confused with Saint Sara Kali, she prefers to be called Sara, the gypsy. Sarita works in defense of women and spiritual protection. For your offering, place a yellow rose in the center of a cardboard plate with white tissue paper. Around the rose, place a banana, a pear, seven strawberries, a slice of watermelon and two slices of sweet bread.

This date is related to the 24th and 25th of May, when they commemorate and pay homage all over the world to Saint Sara Kali, patron saint of the gypsy peoples. In Portugal, it is commemorated on the 24th of June, on the feast of Saint John the Baptist, which was already traditionally celebrated by the country's gypsies.

Offerings to the gypsies

The offerings to the gypsies, as well as any other entity, should be guided by the person in charge of the terreiro or house of Umbanda or Candomblé that you attend. Each entity has its peculiarities and tastes that must be respected. Therefore, talk to the person in charge, the mother or father of saint, before any offering.

The surface where food, drinks and objects will be offered should be lined with colorful fabrics or towels, vegetable leaves or silk. Your offerings need to be colorful, conveying the feeling of joy, happiness and love.

In addition, some objects and other materials used in the offerings are: colored ribbons, perfumes, smoke, Gypsy images, colored handkerchiefs, coins, Gypsy cards, cheerful songs, fruit juices, teas, wines, water, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, fans, crystals, incense, sweets, bread, fruit, honey, candles, flowers, herbs and spices (laurel, cinnamon, rosemary, among others).

Salutation to the gypsies

The greeting used for and by Roma is "Optchá" (pronounced Opatchá by some), which means Salve. It is also used in dances and as a war cry, meaning Olé, Bravo or Vamos, in addition to "Alê Arriba" as a greeting.

Thus, the gypsies arrive bringing much joy and faith and infecting all those who are around. For this reason, it is common for the person to feel well, happier and with more will to live. This spiritual line has much empathy and seeks to preserve the passion and generosity for humanity, as the gypsies have for nature.

Prayer to the Gypsies

To perform your prayer to the gypsies, you should recite the following prayers:

Hail the sun, nature, the morning dew!

Hail Almighty God, who gives me the happiness to take the blessing of all nature.

Hail the wind, the rain, the clouds, the stars and the moon!

Hail the forces of the waters, the earth, the sand and the fertile soil!

May your medicine be beautiful, the bread I break at the table be multiplied.

The Universe embraces me and may the four elements: Earth, Water, Fire and Air give me the necessary strength to fight.
