Oxum's History

In one of the stories, Oxum is the daughter of Oxalá and considered the second wife of Xangô, being very curious, loved and the most beautiful of the daughters. Her father consulted Orunmilá, the lord of divination for the progression of destiny, Oxum accompanied him until she wanted to learn to read cowrie shells.

However, Orunmilá, or Ifá, asked Oxum to ask Exu any doubts she had, because she had the gift of seeing the destiny through this oracle. When she asked Oxalá, her father, for permission to learn how to read the future, he answered that only Ifá has the gift of interpreting the cowrie shells.

Disappointed with her father's answer, she went to Exu to ask him to teach her how to read this oracle, since she knew Orunmilá's secret. However, she was disappointed again, since Exu also refused her request. Oxum had to think of something else she could do to get what she wanted.

He decided to go to the forest to ask the sorceresses Yámi Oroxongá to teach him to read the conch, but he had no idea that these sorceresses wanted to catch Exu through deception. They took advantage of the opportunity to influence Oxum to do what they planned.

This Yabá learned a magic with the Yámi and was asked to make an offering to them whenever the spell was done. When she came to Exu, she asked him to guess what was in his hands. As he approached, Oxum blew a shiny powder in his face, leaving him blind.

The false concern of Exu with the cowrie shells made him ask for help to Orixá, answering his questions to make up the game. When she returned to the kingdom, Oxum told everything she did and that it was for love. Ifá was surprised and gave her a game of cowrie shells.

Visual characteristics

Oxum is represented by a young, beautiful black woman with medium-length curly dark hair. In some images, she is portrayed with a huge pregnant belly and, in other illustrations, she is characterized with an adê (crown) covering her face and no hair.

In the illustrations, she is usually wearing a gold plaid dress that may or may not have a large yellow bow in the chest region and gold-colored accessories on her arms. She is always holding a gold mirror, which serves to give back everything she receives in equal proportion, and has a pearl necklace around her neck.

Relationship between Oxum and other Orixás

Oxum is the second wife of Xangô. Her relationship with Obá, one of the three wives, was one of rivalry, causing the warrior and passionate Orixá to cut off her own ear and deliver it inside the amalá as devotion to her husband in an attempt to receive his attention and affection. In the end, everything went wrong, creating great discord between the two, arousing the anger of her husband and the two being expelled from his kingdom.

In addition to being the daughter of Oxalá, in many stories, she is the daughter of Iemanjá. However, in other legends, she is characterized as the sister of this Iabá. According to one of these legends, Oxum had lost her kingdom, her wealth and beauty, crying on the banks of a river, which reached the bottom of the sea.

Realizing that the tears were from sweet Oxum, Yemanjá helped her get back on her feet. She cut off part of her enormous hair so that Iabá could wear it as a wig until hers grew back, gave her the corals from the sea and made her the owner of all the gold on Earth. Since then, one can take care of the other's children as well as her own.
