During the 5th century, the Catholic Church established Valentine's Day as Valentine's Day with the intention of encouraging couples to form a family through marriage.

However, by the end of the 18th century, Valentine's Day was removed from the religious calendar, as the Catholic Church claimed that there was insufficient evidence of the martyr's actual existence.

Even so, nowadays people all over the world turn to Saint Valentine to ask for blessings for their relationships and couples celebrate his day on February 14, the date he was executed.

History

Saint Valentine was a bishop in the Roman Empire and lived in the third century, a time when marriages were forbidden by Emperor Claudius II, because according to his conception soldiers who were unmarried had a better performance in wars.

However, Saint Valentine became known for performing several hidden marriages until he was discovered, arrested and killed. However, even while in prison he received several flowers and letters from people as a form of gratitude for having performed his marriages.

While still in prison, Saint Valentine fell in love with a blind girl, the daughter of one of the guards. The story goes that he miraculously cured her of her blindness, leaving a farewell letter with the phrase "From your Valentine" on the day of his death.

The date of his martyrdom is still uncertain, as different stories claim that he was executed in the years 269, 270, 273 or 280. However, most accounts state that Saint Valentine was killed on February 14, 269 beside the Flaminian Gate in northern Rome.

What was Valentine like?

Saint Valentine was born in 175 and was bishop in Rome overriding the laws of the Emperor of the time Claudius II by performing marriages on the sly, for which reason he was martyred.

Besides being the patron saint of couples, he is also considered a patron saint of epilepsy and beekeepers although, he is also known as the saint that never existed due to the Catholic Church not finding enough evidence of his existence.

Another version of the story says that Saint Valentine was a man of great faith who refused to deny Christianity and for that reason was executed.

His image is represented as a bishop holding a staff in one hand and a key in the other. In other versions, one finds the image of a bishop holding a staff in one hand and a book with a heart on top in the other.

What does Valentine represent?

Considered the patron saint of engaged couples and happy marriages, Saint Valentine is depicted in images with roses and birds symbolizing love and romance.

In the 17th century, the date February 14, the day Valentine was martyred, began to be celebrated as Valentine's Day in France and England. Later, this tradition also began to be practiced in the United States.

The 14th of February was still considered, in the Middle Ages, as the first day when birds mated and as a result, couples used to leave romantic messages on the doors of their loved ones' homes on this day.

In current times, on Valentine's Day couples often exchange romantic cards and gifts as a demonstration of love and affection, inspired by the note that Saint Valentine left to his beloved before he was killed.

Martyrdom

Saint Valentine was arrested and sentenced to death for performing secret marriages during the time of the Roman Empire, when Emperor Claudius II had forbidden men to marry, because according to his ideology single men would be better fighters in wars.

On February 14, 269, Saint Valentine was killed by beating and beheading beside the Flaminian Gate in Rome. However, another version of the reason for this saint's martyrdom was his refusal to renounce Christianity.

His remains are scattered around the world. His skull can be found in the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin, Rome. Other parts of Saint Valentine's relic are found in Madrid, Poland, France, Vienna and Scotland.

Valentine's Day celebrations around the world

Saint Valentine was the bishop who inspired the "Valentine Day" in many parts of the world, also known as Valentine's Day here in Brazil. However, Valentine's Day abroad is celebrated on February 14 and here in Brazil this date was changed to June 12 due to commercial interest.

In Denmark it is customary to send rhyming letters signed with several dots, each one representing the letter of a name. If the person who receives the letter guesses the name of her suitor she will win a chocolate egg on Easter Sunday. If not, she will have to present her admirer with the Easter egg a few days after Valentine's Day.

On the other hand, in Finland and Estonia the date 14 February is celebrated as friendship day, because in these countries it is understood that love should also be considered among friends.

Valentine's Day Celebrations in Brazil

Brazilians do not usually celebrate Valentine's Day, as this tradition is restricted to a few countries abroad. In Brazil, Valentine's Day has been celebrated on June 12 since 1948, coinciding with the eve of Saint Anthony's Day, the matchmaker saint.

The reason for establishing June 12 as Valentine's Day in Brazil was strategically commercial, as June was considered a month in which sales were very weak.

Then, a publicist named João Doria launched a campaign with the goal of improving sales in June in a São Paulo store. It consisted of changing the celebration of Valentine's Day to June 12, encouraging the exchange of gifts between couples and, consequently, improving sales in the month of June.
