Who was Our Lady of Fatima?

Being understood as a very important symbol within the Catholic Church, Our Lady of Fatima makes her first great apparition in Portugal, in the city of Fatima, more specifically in the Cova da Iria. The year is 1917 and three children, little shepherds, are taking care of their sheep.

Near the water well, the little shepherds, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, see a beautiful woman wrapped in a white mantle and she, who knows their names and knows the faith and the future of the little ones, begins to speak about the phases that the world will go through and the chaos that humanity will experience.

The first sentence she uttered was "I have come from Heaven" and she even gave instructions on how to pray to end the First World War.

Knowing more about Our Lady of Fatima

Our Lady of Fatima is characterized by a series of symbols in her imagetic construction for the world. She is almost always visually identified when she is seen by her faithful and even by those who are not so close to the church, since her prophecies are propagated until today.

Check out the main characteristics of this great saint and how important they are in the entire Catholic institution!

Origin and history

The 'sub classifications' of Our Lady occur according to her apparitions and their locations and circumstances. Here in Brazil, for example, we call her Our Lady Aparecida, because of her apparition in a river, by fishermen.

Our Lady of Fatima is named after the famous apparition in the city of Fatima, Portugal, as well as Our Lady of Guadalupe, who made her apparition in the city of the same name.

Miracles of Our Lady of Fatima

The apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima are considered miracles, since, normally, after these apparitions, situations change abruptly, and no plausible explanation is found for this, understood as, simply, a miracle.

In all, 6 apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima have been recorded, the last being the most 'important' and well-known, with Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia. The three children, who were cousins, followed priestly paths thereafter and lived to utter and propagate the Fatima prophecies. The youngest of them, Lucia, passed away in 2005.

Visual characteristics

The image of Our Lady of Fatima is well known around the world and when it is seen, people usually know it is her. Covered with a white robe, the Saint holds a rosary in her hands, which is her symbol and most powerful instrument.

In addition, she has a serene and angelic face, which bears white skin, unlike, for example, Our Lady of Aparecida, who has black skin. Our Lady of Fatima also carries a large golden crown.

What does Our Lady of Fatima represent?

When we talk about Our Lady of Fatima, we are talking about goodness, gentleness and also about how we can face the evils of the world. A great part of her prophecies, said to the three little cousins, really came true.

She, as she spoke to them, taught them how to deal with everything that was to come. For example, Our Lady of Fatima said that humanity would only come out of the First War if they prayed the rosary, which is her greatest instrument. Indeed, it is the key to dealing with all the barbarities of the world.

Devotion in the world

Our Lady of Fatima is, without a doubt, one of the subdivisions of the Saint most known and adored around the world. Her day is May 13, the day she appeared to the children in 1917. She is very well known, especially in Hispanic countries whose languages originate from Latin.

Here in Brazil, especially, her devotion is stronger than in most of the world, since we have a strong Portuguese influence, because of colonization, which facilitates access to documents and prayers in the language. We are even the largest worshipers of Our Lady of Fatima, second only to her country of origin, Portugal.
