Knowing more about Xangô

Xangô is the Orixá who protects those who obey the laws and the customs, besides sharing positive energies with their fellow man. Meanwhile, those who do not present a good conduct in life will be judged by him with the aim of restoring the spiritual balance. Learn more about his history and influences in the sequence!

History of Xangô

The legend of Xangô says that before becoming an Orixá he was the king of Òyó, this region today is known as Nigeria. He was considered a tyrant, being authoritarian and violent. Xangô's justice was relentless, often being associated with the element of rock because of these characteristics.

When he was king, Xangô did not measure efforts to conquer other kingdoms and expand his territory. His powerful kingdom was known throughout the continent and was highly respected, because despite being a violent warrior he did not fail to treat other people with the righteousness of justice.

He is also represented as the Orixá of fire and thunder. Although fearless by many people, he became a great king capable of unifying the entire Yoruba people. He is also known as the creator of the cult of male ancestors, the egungum, and as the only one capable of exercising power over the dead.

His instrument of war was the Oxé (two-edged axe) through which he punished thieves, evildoers and liars. Another important detail is his connection with Nature, through her Xangô drew his strength and knowledge that were used when necessary.

Visual characteristics

The image of Xangô is usually depicted wearing red garments the color of fire, the red hue reflects that he belongs to royalty. He is also holding in his hands an axe, known as the two-faced axe or by Oxé which is his instrument of war.

Xangô syncretism

With the arrival of African descendants in Brazil, their culture went through a process of syncretism. Therefore, the religions of African origin have undergone several changes in an attempt to protect the rites. In this sense, Xangô has a strong presence in the oldest terreiros of the country that are found in Bahia and Pernambuco.

In an attempt to protect their customs, the Afro-descendants needed to adapt many religious symbols and figures. They then assimilated some Catholic saints and incorporated them into Candomblé and Umbanda, referring to them as if they were their Orixás.

Thus, the figures of St. John the Baptist and St. Peter came to be considered as Xangô by Candomblé. In Umbanda, Xangô is represented by St. Jerônimo, who is known as the Saint of Letters.

Sons of Xangô

The sons of Shango are chosen to represent the ancestor to whom they have some degree of similarity. In general, they have a strong physical structure, with a certain tendency to obesity. However, their energy and high self-esteem make them extremely active and elegant of body.

They must preserve their position of nobility among the Orixás, valuing their knowledge and power. Although they are people who are always accompanied, they are solitary and this is due to their austere nature and inflated ego. Making them often vain and overbearing.

Still, the sons of Shango preserve their warrior nature that makes them so stubborn and strategic. As sons of a king they want to be recognized for their achievements and their fortune. Even though they may seem inflexible, they can be both kind and just. That is the nature of the sons of Shango!
